eIndexing Tools

How to use the tools to create a dynamic eIndexes for print, ebooks and websites using IGP:eIndexer Updated: 2017-09-15

 

Starting the eIndexer

      

  1. From the Document Toolbar click the Linking and Index Tools button.
  2. Click the Turn on Index Mode button. The Tool panel will change to the empty e-Index Editor the first time it is used. As you use the e-Indexer the interface will  show the Index in its current state as it is being created.
  3. The eIndexer loads the index from the IGP:Writer Index Section. Do not manually edit this section in IGP:Writer unless you know what you are doing.

The eIndex Interface

The eIndex interface is a tool that allows Index references to be added from anywhere in a book and immediately appear in the interface.

Using the eIndexer

There are three main indexing actions. You can insert the following at the root, sub-term or sub-sub-term level.

  1. Empty Term. An empty index term (topic) with text reference marker in the text.
  2. Term item. A single selected index term and linking marker in the text.
  3. Term Range. A selected range index term range start and end marker as a root, sub-index or sub-sub-index term.

The insertion actions you can use are:

Insert Button. Directly enter a root term with no page reference marker into its alphabetical section. Make sure no text is selected on the Writer page when you do this.

Select-text-Insert Button. Highlight text in writer and click the Insert button. The text will be inserted as a root term with a marker in its alphabetic position.

Select-text-highlight term-double-click. The selected text will be inserted as a sub-term with a marker of the highlighted term with a term item.

Select-text, highlight term and Ctrl-double Click. The selected text will be insert as a linking marker.

Basic Insert Index Term Options

The buttons and their operation are explained here:

1. Insert

The Insert button can be used in the following ways:

  1. Click the button to insert an empty root term or root sub-term. Text entry popup will open. Enter the term and click OK. 
  2. Select text on the Writer page that is to be inserted into the index and click Insert. The highlighted text will be inserted into it's alphabetical position. 

2. Insert Adjust

Highlight text on the Writer page that is to be inserted and click Insert Adjust. an Editing pop-up will open so you can edit the content for correct alphabetical point insertion. You may want to move an article to the end of the term.

Eg: the winner becomes winner, the.

3. Insert Inverted

This is primarily for inserting proper names.

EG: Highlight John Smith will become Smith, John. The content is directly inserted with the last word first and the rest of the text after a comma. The Statue of Liberty will become Liberty, The Statue of

4. See

A blank term can have a See [another term] applied.

Select a term or sub-term by clicking on it. It will be highlighted green.

Click the See button.

Navigate the index and Double Click the target See term. The See term will be inserted into the first term as [*]. This will be processed to text on format generation.

5. See Also

A term with link items can have a See also [another term] applied.

Select a term or sub-term by clicking on it. It will be highlighted green.

Click the See Also button.

Navigate the index and Click the target See Also term. The See Also term will be inserted into the first term as [*]. This will be processed to text on format generation.

6. Move Term

Highlight a term (it will show green). Click the Move Term button. The interface will be muted. Move to the letter you want to insert the term into. Double click the letter, a term or sub-term.

7. Cancel

Cancels any currently selected operation in progress.

8. Range Start

Text selected in IGP:Writer is assigned as the start of an range index term.

9. Range End

Text selected in IGP:Writer is assigned as teh end of a range index term.

10. Filter By Name

Type in a root index term. The term and sub-terms will be displayed. This is to evaluate the suitability or status of a term only. No action can be carried out.

11. Missing Page Refs.

Click and the full index will be analysed to evaluate if any of the page references are missing or wrong. They will be highlighted in red if they exist.

12. Sort Index Term

Allows any alphabetical term group, sub-term group or sub-sub-term group to be alphabetically sorted if required.

13. Sort Page Numbers

This is a major process that should be done at the end of indexing operations. This sorts all the references into their occurence sequence in the book This will overwrite the existing index with Sorted index and reload the interface.

Term Navigation

Click on All or any alphabet to display only the terms in that

Index Term Tools

1. E

Edit the term text and styles

2. i

Make the index term italic.

3. X

Delete the index term. If a term has sub-terms they will also be deleted.

4. *, *_*, [*] and [**]

Click to open the term reference navigation tools and navigate to the term references in IGP:Writer.
