Introduction

This part contains topics that explain how to use the IGP:Media Manager (MM) module to organize and use images, graphics and rich media when generating multiple formats.

Note: This topic does not give instruction on how to prepare images for print.

Feature Overview

Media Manager is where you maintain and access your images, graphics and other media. Here you can:

  1. Upload images and Media Manager will automatically generate multiple images for various formats.
  2. Use settings to configure how images are processed in each tab context.
  3. Select and insert images directly into your XML document.

IGP:Digital Publisher is a multi-format production environment that produces print PDF, Online and mobile delivery pages, e-Book formats and various content packages. To reduce the amount of repetitive image processing you have to carry out externally, Media Manager processes images for all formats based on certain rules. These are:

  1. The uploaded image is assumed to be the highest resolution image and should be the print image.
  2. If you are targeting print your uploaded image format must conform to your printer's requirements. That generally means it will be CMYK, 300dpi for grayscale and color if the target is PDF X1A, or RGB with an embedded CIE profile if the PDF is going to be PDF X3.
  3. The system applies the _print.* identifier to the uploaded images.
  4. Other generated images get appropriate file name extenders. The most common one is _online.* which is used for web views and e-book formats.

Special Image Issues

This section is additional information based on real-world format requirements that have been experienced over the years.

PDF Online and Offline

When the same appearance is critical for both online and offline PDFs and the e-book oriented percentage sizing is not appropriate, this is what to do.

  1. Set the Image upload options to resolution resizing.
  2. Make sure your print image is at the required size (dpi and dimensions) for the required high-resolution print output.
  3. Upload your prepared print image. The online image will be created with the same dimensions at the set resolution. Eg: If your print image was four inches wide at 300dpi the width in pixels is 1200px. The online image will be 4 inches at 96dpi or 384px.
  4. When you create your print PDF the high-resolution image will be used. When you create your RGB PDF the low resolution image will be used. Both will appear exactly the same size in the output PDF.
  5. Your ePub Image will now be the same fixed size and position as the low-res image. It will not dynamically resize in a reader viewport. You must make sure the output image size is suitable for the range of devices you are targeting.
