Controlling Paragraph Tracking and Flow

This section assumes the TIB interface is open, IDs have been generated and the Calibrate procedure has been carried out.

The Tracking Interface


  1. Tracking button: This small gray button is displayed to the left of each paragraph, header or list item. Click the bullet besides a particular paragraph to activate the tracking adjustment dialog for a paragraph, header or list item. The selected paragraph has a pale gray background applied.
  2. You can only see this dialog once. As you click on each button the interface context changes up and down to the selected paragraph.
  3. If you make changes on a paragraph the Tracking Button turns red and the affected paragraph has a background colour applied. This makes it very easy to identify which paragraphs have been changed.
  4. Dialog Buttons: There are two main dialogue buttons:
    1. Reset: Click the Reset button to reset all typogrpahical settings applied  to an active paragraph. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Alt+R. This includes both Tracking adjustments like Word Spacing (W) and Letter Spacing {L} and Flow Control settings like SH (Soft Hyphen) , NBS( Non Breaking Space) etc.. These changes will be saved when the main Save button is clicked.
    2. Content Reset: This button on the TIB tracking interface when clicked will only reset typogrpahical changes made using the Flow Control Tools example SH (Soft Hyphen) , NBS( Non Breaking Space) and ZWS (Zero Width Space) etc. The changes will still be saved having to click the main Save button.
    3. Merge: Click this button to accept the editorial changes. This will be applicable only for a particular paragraph of a document. On clicking the Merge button Pink ground applied to a particular paragraph will be changed to Yellow in the Compostion PDF view of TIB.
    4. Close: Clicking the Close button will dismiss the Tracking Dialog without making any changes. You can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+X can also be used to close this dialog. You may need to do this to clearly see other paragraphs.
  5. Flow control Tools: There are currently flow control tools. These are:
    1. SH (Soft Hyphen): Click the button to insert a soft hyphen into the current cursor position. Make sure you get that cursor position correct. This will not work if text is selected.
    2. NBS (Non Breaking Space): Click the button to insert a non-breaking space into the current cursor position. This will not work if text is selected.
    3. ZWS (Zero Width Space): Click the button to insert a zero width space into the current cursor position. This will not work if text is selected.
    4. TS (Thin Space): Click the button to insert a thin space into the current caret position. This will not work if text is selected.
    5. HS (Hair Space) : Click the button to insert a this space into the current cursor position. This will not work on selected text.
    6. NO HYP (No Hyphenation): Click the button to wrap the selected content with a span with nohyp-rw class. You must have text selected for this to work. When you use this there may be a noticeable interface ripple as hyphenation is reapplied to the HTML view. 
  6. Tracking adjustments: There are two slider tracking adjustments for Word spacing and Letter spacing.
    1. Word Spacing: You can adjust word spacing in 1/10th point increments from -4 points to 4 points. Your changes will instantly be seen in the interface. You use the following methods to change tracking values:
      1. Drag the slider left and right
      2. Click on the slider bar anywhere
      3. Click on the left-right tumblers for fine adjustments
      4. Directly enter a value into the text window and click outside. Alternatively you can use Up Arrow to Increment and Down Arrow to Decrement the tracking value. However this will only work when tracking value textbox is the focus.
      5. Use the keyboard shortcut Alt+W to increase the word spacing.
      6. Use the combination Alt+Shift+W to reduce (Decrement) word spacing.
    2. Letter Spacing: You can adjust letter spacing in 5/100th point increments (half a tenth of a point) from -2 points to 2 points. Your changes will instantly be seen in the HTML interface. You use the following methods to change tracking values:
      1. Drag the slider left and right
      2. Click on the slider bar anywhere
      3. Click on the left-right tumblers for fine adjustments
      4. Directly enter a value into the text window and click outside. Alternatively you can use Up Arrow to Increment and Down Arrow to Decrement the tracking value. However this will only work when tracking value textbox is the focus.
      5. Use the keyboard shortcut Alt+L to increase (Increment) the letter spacing.
      6. Use the key combination Alt+Shift+L to reduce (Decrement) the letter spacing.
  7. To view any flow or tracking changes click the Save button on the main TIB toolbar. This will save your changes and regenerate the PDF with those changes.
  8. The generated PDF will open at the same page where the Tracking dialog is open.
